Flowerhorn Cichlid
Hybrid cichlid
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cichlidae
📍 Asia (captive-developed hybrid)
Distinctive man-made hybrid cichlid with a prominent nuchal hump (kok). Extremely hardy but highly aggressive — must be kept alone. Develops a strong bond with its keeper.
Care Guide
Diet
Flowerhorns are carnivorous and require high-protein foods including quality cichlid pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional live feeders like small fish or shrimp. Feed adults once daily in portions they can consume in 2-3 minutes, adjusting based on water temperature and individual appetite.
Behavior
Highly territorial and aggressive, Flowerhorns must be housed alone as they will attack or kill any tankmates. They are intelligent, interactive fish that recognize their owners and can be hand-fed, displaying curious and bold personalities. Males develop prominent nuchal humps (kok) that intensify with age and dominance.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but challenging and rarely attempted in home aquariums. Pairs are extremely aggressive toward each other and require careful introduction and large separate tanks; they may injure or kill each other during spawning. Fry are prolific but require intensive feeding and water management.
Tank Mates
May be tolerated due to nocturnal behavior and armored body, but aggression risk remains high
Snails may be crushed or harassed; only attempt in very large tanks with hiding spots
Small snails are often eaten; only suitable as live food or in heavily planted refugium areas
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against objects, lethargy
Raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use ich medication (malachite green or formalin) following label instructions, improve filtration
Hole-in-the-Head (HITH)
Pits or holes developing on head and lateral line, loss of appetite, behavioral changes
Improve water quality with frequent changes, enhance diet with vitamin-enriched foods and quality pellets, use metronidazole if parasitic cause suspected
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin loss
Perform 50% water change, improve water quality and filtration, use broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, ensure adequate nutrition
Bacterial Infection
Red streaks on body, open sores, swollen areas, cloudy eyes, lethargy
Isolate in hospital tank, perform daily water changes, use antibiotic medication (tetracycline or similar), maintain optimal water parameters
