Giant Bacopa
Bacopa amplexicaulis
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Plantaginaceae
📍 North America (Eastern US, Central America)
A larger Bacopa species with distinctive clasping (amplexicaul) leaves that wrap around the stem at the base. The blue-violet flowers it produces above the waterline are among the most attractive of any aquarium plant. Submerged leaves are broad and light green, giving it a lush, robust appearance. Grows quickly and is very adaptable — excellent as an emersed pond margin plant or fully submerged background plant.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and benefit from the shelter provided
Small, non-aggressive fish that thrive in planted tanks and appreciate the dense vegetation
Excellent algae control without damaging healthy plant tissue; adds visual interest
Complementary foreground plant that creates layered aquascaping with Giant Bacopa as background
Slow-growing companion plant with different leaf structure; both thrive in low to high light
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that appreciates plant cover without uprooting or consuming vegetation
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf holes or necrosis
Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer (e.g., Thrive, EasyLife) 2-3 times weekly; ensure adequate lighting and CO₂ if desired
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline
Reduce light duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, improve water flow
Root Rot
Mushy stems, foul odor, blackened roots, plant collapse
Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste, increase water circulation, trim affected portions and replant healthy stems
Melting
Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent or translucent leaves, stem degradation
Gradually acclimate plant to new conditions, maintain stable parameters (pH 6.0-8.0, temp 15-28°C), ensure adequate nutrients and lighting
