Gold Nugget Pleco
Baryancistrus xanthellus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Loricariidae
📍 Rio Xingu, Brazil
Gold nugget plecos are stunning loricariids with a dark body covered in bright yellow spots and yellow-tipped fins. They are territorial and require warm, oxygen-rich, fast-flowing water with driftwood. They are algae scrapers that also need protein in their diet.
Care Guide
Diet
Gold Nugget Plecos are omnivores requiring a balanced diet of algae-based foods and protein. Offer high-quality algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, cucumber), and sinking carnivore pellets 4-5 times weekly. Provide driftwood for constant grazing, as wood consumption aids digestion and provides essential fiber.
Behavior
These plecos are territorial and nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden in caves or under driftwood. They become more active at dusk and throughout the night, scraping surfaces and foraging. Males are particularly aggressive toward other plecos and similar-sized bottom-dwellers, requiring adequate spacing and hiding spots.
Breeding
Breeding Gold Nugget Plecos in captivity is extremely difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require very specific cave conditions, pristine water quality, and stable warm temperatures. Success is primarily limited to experienced breeders with specialized setups; most specimens in the hobby are wild-caught.
Tank Mates
Small algae eaters that occupy different microhabitats and pose no threat to Gold Nuggets
Mid-water dweller with similar warm water requirements; unlikely to compete for bottom territory
Schooling fish that stay in upper water column and avoid bottom-dwelling plecos
May be consumed if small; only suitable if pleco is well-fed and shrimp have ample hiding spots
Both are territorial plecos; only compatible in very large tanks (75+ gallons) with multiple caves
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against surfaces
Raise temperature gradually to 30°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or ich medication; maintain for 10-14 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin loss
Improve water quality with frequent partial changes, remove decaying food/waste, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; ensure adequate oxygen and current
Bacterial Infections
Open sores, lesions on body, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, isolate if possible, maintain pristine water conditions
Malnutrition/Vitamin Deficiency
Stunted growth, faded coloration, lethargy, loss of appetite
Diversify diet with quality algae wafers, vegetables, and protein sources; supplement with vitamin-enriched foods; ensure adequate driftwood for wood consumption
