Hornwort

Ceratophyllum demersum

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaCeratophyllaceae

📍 Worldwide (widely distributed)

Ask Finn

Hornwort is one of the most adaptable aquatic plants available, surviving in a wide range of conditions from cold ponds to tropical tanks. It requires no substrate and can float or be anchored. It grows rapidly, absorbing nutrients, and provides excellent cover for fry.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, leaf deterioration starting from older leaves

Treatment

Add comprehensive liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients and micronutrients; perform partial water changes to reduce accumulated waste; ensure adequate lighting

Algae Overgrowth on Leaves

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating plant surfaces; reduced photosynthesis; plant appears dirty or fuzzy

Treatment

Increase water circulation, reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove affected portions, perform water changes

Plant Decay (Rot)

Symptoms

Mushy stems, blackened or translucent tissue, foul odor, plant disintegration

Treatment

Remove affected portions immediately, improve water circulation and aeration, reduce organic waste through water changes, ensure adequate lighting, check for ammonia/nitrite spikes

Copper Toxicity

Symptoms

Leaf bleaching, stunted growth, tissue necrosis, plant death despite adequate nutrients

Treatment

Perform large water changes to dilute copper, avoid copper-based medications and fertilizers, use copper-free plant treatments, test water for copper levels
