Imitator Corydoras

Corydoras imitator

AnimaliaChordataActinopterygii

📍 South America

Ask Finn

A species from the Putumayo River in Peru and Colombia that earned its name by closely mimicking the coloration of other corydoras species in its range, particularly Corydoras adolfoi. It displays a pale body with a black saddle over the head and a vivid orange patch behind the eye, and thrives in groups of 6+ in soft, acidic water.

Care Guide

Diet

Imitator Corydoras are bottom feeders that primarily consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure proper nutrition and encourage natural foraging behavior. Feed small amounts that are consumed within a few minutes to avoid water quality issues.

Behavior

These peaceful catfish are highly social and must be kept in groups of 6 or more to exhibit natural schooling and reduce stress. They spend most of their time on the substrate sifting through gravel and detritus, occasionally darting upward for food. They are nocturnal to crepuscular and most active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours.

Breeding

Breeding Imitator Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved by hobbyists. They require cool water temperatures (around 72°F), soft acidic conditions, and pristine water quality to trigger spawning. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially, making successful rearing challenging without specialized setup.

Common Diseases

Barbel Erosion

Symptoms

Deterioration or loss of barbels; reduced bottom-feeding activity; visible damage to facial area

Treatment

Improve water quality immediately, perform frequent water changes, and ensure substrate is smooth sand rather than sharp gravel. Add Indian almond leaves to acidify water naturally.

Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)

Symptoms

White spots on body and fins; rapid gill movement; flashing against substrate; lethargy

Treatment

Raise water temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily 25% water changes, and treat with ich medication following label directions. Ensure adequate aeration during treatment.

Fin Rot

Symptoms

Frayed or deteriorating fins; discoloration at fin edges; progressive fin damage

Treatment

Perform immediate 50% water change, improve water quality, and treat with antibacterial medication if secondary infection occurs. Ensure water parameters remain stable and soft.

Columnaris (Flexibacter columnaris)

Symptoms

Whitish film on body or mouth; loss of appetite; lethargy; rapid deterioration

Treatment

Isolate affected fish immediately, perform daily water changes, and treat with antibacterial medication. Maintain pristine water conditions and avoid overcrowding.
