Quillwort

Isoetes velata

PlantaeTracheophytaLycopodiopsidaIsoetalesIsoetaceae

📍 South America

Ask Finn

Ancient, grass-like plant with quill-shaped leaves growing from a corm. Creates a unique tuft-grass look. Thrives in nutrient-rich substrate.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, or leaf melting despite adequate lighting

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing with all-in-one liquid fertilizers or add root tabs. Test water parameters and adjust macronutrient and micronutrient supplementation accordingly

Algae Overgrowth on Leaves

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating the quill-shaped leaves, reducing photosynthetic efficiency

Treatment

Introduce algae-eating shrimp or fish like Amano Shrimp or Otocinclus. Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily and perform regular water changes to reduce excess nutrients

Corm Rot

Symptoms

Soft, mushy base; foul odor; leaves detaching from the corm; plant collapse

Treatment

Improve water circulation and substrate conditions. Ensure substrate is not compacted. Perform partial water changes and reduce organic waste. Remove affected plant if rot is severe

Slow or No Growth

Symptoms

Plant remains static for weeks or months; no new leaf development; existing leaves remain small

Treatment

Increase CO2 supplementation, boost lighting to medium-high levels, and enhance fertilizer dosing. Ensure water temperature is in the 23-27°C range and substrate is nutrient-rich
