Leucomelas Corydoras
Corydoras leucomelas
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 South America
A boldly patterned corydoras from Peru and Colombia featuring a stark black-and-white pattern: a white body with a large black saddle over the dorsal area and a black blotch at the front of the dorsal fin. It thrives in groups of 6+ in soft to moderately hard water with fine sand substrate and good filtration.
Care Guide
Diet
Leucomelas Corydoras are bottom feeders that consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods as their primary diet. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure proper nutrition and encourage natural foraging behavior. Feed small amounts that reach the substrate, as they rarely compete for food in the water column.
Behavior
These peaceful catfish are highly social and must be kept in groups of 6 or more to exhibit natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They spend most of their time on the substrate sifting through sand and gravel, occasionally surfacing to gulp air. They are nocturnal to crepuscular, showing peak activity during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours.
Breeding
Breeding Leucomelas Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and conditioning with live foods before spawning. Eggs are typically scattered among plants or substrate, and fry are extremely small and difficult to rear without specialized foods like infusoria.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful bottom-dweller with identical water parameter needs and non-aggressive behavior
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmer that won't compete for bottom space or food
Gentle schooling fish with compatible water requirements and peaceful temperament
Peaceful invertebrate that shares bottom habitat; ensure adequate hiding spots for shrimp
Peaceful dwarf cichlid with similar water parameters; may occasionally chase corydoras but generally compatible
Larger shrimp less likely to be eaten; shares detritus-feeding role without direct competition
Common Diseases
Barbel Erosion (Whisker Disease)
Deterioration or complete loss of barbels; reduced feeding activity; difficulty locating food
Improve water quality immediately, perform frequent water changes, and ensure fine sand substrate. Provide high-quality foods and consider antibacterial medication if secondary infection occurs
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins; increased scratching against substrate; lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily water changes, and treat with ich medication. Ensure adequate aeration as corydoras are sensitive to low oxygen
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins; discoloration at fin edges; lethargy
Perform large water changes to improve water quality, maintain pristine conditions, and treat with antibacterial medication if severe. Ensure substrate is clean and free of sharp objects
Dropsy
Bloated appearance; scales standing on end; lethargy and loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish immediately, perform frequent water changes, and provide high-quality foods. Dropsy is often fatal; treatment is primarily supportive care
