Lobelia cardinalis

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaCampanulaceae

Variety of Lobelia Cardinalis · small form

📍 Eastern North America (cultivar)

Ask Finn

Compact rosette plant with spoon-shaped leaves — green on top, vivid purple underneath. One of the most striking two-tone aquascaping plants. Very adaptable and slow-growing. Excellent as a midground accent.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, loss of purple undersides

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing (macronutrients and micronutrients), ensure adequate lighting, and consider adding CO2 supplementation

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, and manually remove visible algae

Root Rot

Symptoms

Mushy base, foul odor from substrate, leaves wilting despite adequate water

Treatment

Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste buildup, increase water circulation, and consider replanting in fresh substrate if severely affected

Melting

Symptoms

Leaves becoming translucent, tissue dissolving, plant appearing to disintegrate

Treatment

Gradually acclimate plant to tank conditions over 2-3 weeks, ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5), and maintain consistent temperature
