Loxozonus Corydoras
Corydoras loxozonus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 South America
A corydoras from Colombia and Venezuela featuring a distinctive diagonal dark stripe that runs obliquely across the body rather than horizontally, giving it a unique look among corydoras. It should be kept in groups of 6+ on fine sand, in soft to moderately hard water with good oxygenation.
Care Guide
Diet
Loxozonus Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders that primarily consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and fine-grained foods. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts once daily, removing uneaten food after a few minutes to maintain water quality.
Behavior
These peaceful catfish are nocturnal and spend most of their time foraging along the substrate, constantly sifting through sand with their barbels. They are highly social and must be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behavior. They are generally inactive during the day but become more active at dusk and throughout the night.
Breeding
Breeding Loxozonus Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and a well-established group with proper conditioning. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food, making rearing challenging for most hobbyists.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and shared preference for fine sand substrate and soft water
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmers that won't compete for bottom space or disturb the corydoras
Gentle schooling fish with identical water parameter requirements and peaceful demeanor
Peaceful and compatible with soft water conditions, though they occupy different tank zones
Small invertebrates that share the bottom zone; ensure adequate hiding spots for both species
Nocturnal algae eater with similar peaceful nature, though both prefer fine sand and may compete for space
Common Diseases
Barbel Erosion
Shortened or deteriorating barbels, reduced foraging ability, visible damage to facial structures
Improve water quality immediately, perform frequent partial water changes, ensure fine sand substrate, and provide quality sinking foods. Add aquarium salt at recommended doses if bacterial infection is suspected.
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid gill movement, lethargy, rubbing against substrate
Raise water temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily 25% water changes, and treat with ich medication. Ensure adequate aeration as corydoras are sensitive to low oxygen during treatment.
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Perform immediate 50% water change, improve water quality and aeration, and treat with antibacterial medication if secondary infection occurs. Ensure substrate is clean and free of sharp objects.
Stress-Related Illness
Loss of appetite, hiding behavior, faded coloration, reduced activity even at night
Verify group size is at least 6 individuals, check water parameters (especially pH and temperature), reduce tank disturbances, and provide more hiding spots with plants and décor.
