Ludwigia sp. 'Red'
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Myrtales›Onagraceae
📍 South America
Hardy red stem plant that colours up even in moderate light. One of the most forgiving red plants for beginners. Grows fast.
Tank Mates
Will not damage plant tissue and help control algae without uprooting stems
Peaceful shrimp that won't harm the plant and add visual interest
Small, peaceful fish that won't uproot or damage the plant
Algae-eating fish that graze without harming healthy plant tissue
Complementary stem plant with similar care requirements and growth rate
Excellent companion plant that creates natural-looking aquascapes with similar nutrient needs
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, loss of red pigmentation
Increase fertilizer dosing, add macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium), consider root tabs for substrate-rooted plants, and ensure adequate lighting
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, and manually remove affected leaves
Melting
Leaves become translucent, mushy stems, rapid tissue breakdown after planting
Ensure gradual acclimation to new tank conditions, maintain stable water parameters, improve water circulation, and trim affected stems to encourage new growth
Iron Deficiency
Yellowing of new leaves while veins remain green, reduced red coloration
Add iron-rich fertilizer or chelated iron supplements, dose according to product instructions, and maintain consistent fertilization schedule
