Melanistius Corydoras
Corydoras melanistius
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 South America
A spotted corydoras from the Orinoco and coastal rivers of Venezuela and Guyana, featuring a pale body with rows of dark brown to black spots across the body and fins. It is peaceful and social, thriving in groups of 6+ on a fine sand substrate with clean, well-oxygenated water.
Care Guide
Diet
Melanistius Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders that primarily consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts once daily, removing uneaten food after a few minutes to maintain water quality.
Behavior
These peaceful, social catfish are most active during dawn and dusk, spending much of their time sifting through substrate in search of food. They are schooling fish that exhibit reduced stress and more natural behavior when kept in groups of 6 or more. They are compatible with other bottom dwellers and rarely show aggression, though they may occasionally uproot plants while foraging.
Breeding
Breeding Melanistius Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and specific seasonal triggers that are hard to replicate. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first weeks, making large-scale breeding impractical for most hobbyists.
Tank Mates
Similar water parameters and peaceful temperament; occupy mid-water column without competing for bottom space
Compatible bottom dweller with identical water requirements and peaceful nature
Peaceful schooling fish with matching pH and temperature needs; active in mid-water zones
Peaceful top-dweller that won't compete for bottom space; compatible water parameters
Peaceful invertebrate that shares similar water conditions; minimal competition for resources
Nocturnal bottom dweller with compatible requirements; may compete for food but generally peaceful
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, rubbing against objects, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily 25% water changes, use ich medication as directed; ensure good aeration as corydoras are sensitive to low oxygen
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin loss
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, remove sharp decorations, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure substrate is clean and smooth
Barbel Erosion
Shortened or missing barbels, difficulty foraging, behavioral changes
Use fine sand substrate exclusively (avoid gravel), maintain excellent water quality with frequent changes, ensure adequate nutrition; condition is often irreversible but prevents further damage
Columnaris (Mouth Fungus)
White cottony growth around mouth and gills, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite
Perform large water changes, use antibacterial medication, isolate affected fish if possible; maintain water temperature at 75-77°F and ensure excellent filtration
