Polystictus Corydoras
Corydoras polystictus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Callichthyidae
📍 Mato Grosso, Brazil
A small, attractively marked corydoras covered in small dark spots over a pale body. C. polystictus is a peaceful, undemanding species that adapts well to a range of water conditions. It is an active forager and looks charming in a planted aquarium with a dark sand substrate that shows off its spotted pattern.
Care Guide
Diet
Polystictus Corydoras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia), and live foods. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. They are active foragers and will scavenge the substrate for leftover food and organic matter.
Behavior
These are peaceful, active bottom-dwellers that spend most of their time foraging along the substrate with their barbels. They are highly social and must be kept in groups of at least 6 individuals to exhibit natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They are nocturnal to crepuscular and are most active during dawn, dusk, and nighttime hours.
Breeding
Breeding Polystictus Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require specific water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 20-22°C), and a well-established planted tank with soft substrate. Successful spawning is uncommon, and fry rearing requires specialized care and live foods.
Tank Mates
Similar water parameters and peaceful temperament; occupy mid-water column
Compatible water conditions and peaceful schooling behavior
Peaceful algae eater; shares bottom zone without aggression
Peaceful and compatible; prefers upper water column
Peaceful invertebrate; may predate on fry but safe with adults
Hardy plant that won't be uprooted; provides shelter and cover
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against substrate
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, perform daily water changes, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per gallon) or commercial ich treatment; treat for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove decaying food, use antibiotic treatment if severe; ensure adequate substrate for barbel health
Barbel Erosion
Shortened or missing barbels, difficulty foraging, behavioral changes
Use fine sand substrate (not gravel), maintain excellent water quality, ensure proper nutrition; condition is often irreversible but prevents further damage
Dropsy
Bloated appearance, pinecone-like scales, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, provide high-quality foods; condition is often fatal; prevent through good water quality and nutrition
