📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Large, feathery aquatic moss with branching fronds reminiscent of tiny fern leaves. Creates a lush, jungle-like appearance on hardscape.

Common Diseases

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating moss fronds; reduced water clarity; moss appears smothered

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, manually remove visible algae, ensure adequate CO2 and nutrient balance

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Slow or stunted growth, pale or yellowing fronds, loss of vibrant coloration, sparse branching

Treatment

Increase liquid fertilizer dosing, verify CO2 levels are adequate (20-30 ppm), perform 25-30% water changes weekly, consider macronutrient supplementation if using high-light setups

Melting

Symptoms

Fronds becoming translucent, mushy texture, disintegration of new growth, browning tips

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, ensure stable temperature (23-28°C), increase aeration, reduce nutrient levels temporarily, verify CO2 isn't excessive

Bacterial Infection

Symptoms

Slimy coating on fronds, foul odor, rapid deterioration despite good conditions, blackening of tissue

Treatment

Perform 50% water change immediately, remove affected portions, increase aeration and water circulation, reduce feeding of tank fauna, consider antibacterial treatment if severe
