Queen Moss
Hydropogonella gymnostoma
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Hypnales›Hydropogonellaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Large, feathery aquatic moss with branching fronds reminiscent of tiny fern leaves. Creates a lush, jungle-like appearance on hardscape.
Tank Mates
Gentle grazers that clean moss without damaging delicate fronds; excellent for biofilm control
Small and non-destructive; thrive in moss-heavy tanks and help maintain plant health
Peaceful algae eaters that won't uproot moss; benefit from moss as grazing substrate
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements; creates dense, layered aquascaping
Complementary hardscape plant with contrasting leaf structure; same low-light tolerance
Small, peaceful fish that won't damage moss and appreciate the shelter it provides
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating moss fronds; reduced water clarity; moss appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, manually remove visible algae, ensure adequate CO2 and nutrient balance
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow or stunted growth, pale or yellowing fronds, loss of vibrant coloration, sparse branching
Increase liquid fertilizer dosing, verify CO2 levels are adequate (20-30 ppm), perform 25-30% water changes weekly, consider macronutrient supplementation if using high-light setups
Melting
Fronds becoming translucent, mushy texture, disintegration of new growth, browning tips
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, ensure stable temperature (23-28°C), increase aeration, reduce nutrient levels temporarily, verify CO2 isn't excessive
Bacterial Infection
Slimy coating on fronds, foul odor, rapid deterioration despite good conditions, blackening of tissue
Perform 50% water change immediately, remove affected portions, increase aeration and water circulation, reduce feeding of tank fauna, consider antibacterial treatment if severe
