Red Racer Nerite Snail
Vittina waigiensis
Animalia›Mollusca›Gastropoda›Neritidae
📍 Indo-Pacific
Striking nerite with vivid red-orange shell bearing black racing stripes. Among the most attractive freshwater snails. Vigorous algae grazer. Cannot breed in freshwater, keeping populations controlled.
Care Guide
Diet
Red Racer Nerites are primarily algae grazers and will consume algae from surfaces, plants, and substrate throughout the day. Supplement their diet with blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or algae wafers 2-3 times weekly if algae growth is insufficient. They rarely require additional protein sources and thrive best in established tanks with moderate algae growth.
Behavior
These snails are highly active foragers, constantly moving across surfaces in search of algae and biofilm. They are completely peaceful and solitary, showing no aggression toward tank mates or each other. Red Racers are primarily nocturnal but will forage during the day in well-established tanks with abundant food sources.
Breeding
Red Racer Nerites cannot breed in freshwater environments, as they require brackish water for larval development. This makes them excellent for population control in community tanks, as no unwanted breeding will occur. Breeding in captivity is effectively impossible without specialized brackish water setups.
Tank Mates
Similar algae-grazing behavior and peaceful temperament; compatible water parameters
Small, peaceful fish that won't disturb snails; similar temperature requirements
Peaceful and compatible; avoid aggressive individuals that may harass snails
Bottom-dwelling catfish with peaceful nature; complementary feeding habits
Peaceful invertebrates with identical water requirements; no predation risk
Compatible nerite species with same care requirements and peaceful behavior
Common Diseases
Shell Erosion
Pitting, holes, or chalky appearance on shell; reduced shell integrity
Increase water hardness (GH 6-8) and calcium availability through cuttlebone or calcium supplements; maintain stable pH 7.0-8.0
Parasitic Infection
Lethargy, reduced feeding activity, visible parasites on body or shell
Perform 25% water changes; quarantine affected snails; avoid copper-based treatments as snails are sensitive
Bacterial Infection
Discoloration, foul odor from shell, tissue damage, mucus buildup
Improve water quality through frequent partial water changes; maintain optimal temperature and pH; remove decaying food promptly
Starvation
Inactivity, withdrawn into shell for extended periods, visible weight loss
Ensure adequate algae growth or supplement with algae wafers; verify tank has sufficient biofilm and algae coverage
