Mexican Oak Leaf

Shinnersia rivularis

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaAsteraceae

📍 Mexico & Texas

Ask Finn

Fast-growing stem plant with distinctive oak-leaf-shaped leaves. Extremely easy and undemanding — grows well without CO2. The unusual leaf shape adds variety to planted tank backgrounds.

Common Diseases

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, particularly in older leaves

Treatment

Increase fertilizer dosing (especially macronutrients like nitrogen and potassium); ensure adequate lighting and CO₂ is not limiting

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 8–10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus, Amano Shrimp), or use algaecide if severe

Root Rot

Symptoms

Mushy stems, blackened base, foul odor, plant collapse

Treatment

Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic buildup, trim affected portions, increase water circulation, and perform partial water changes

Melting

Symptoms

Rapid leaf dissolution, transparent or translucent appearance, stem softening

Treatment

Gradually acclimate plant to new tank conditions over 2–3 weeks; ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28°C) and adequate lighting
