Sodalis Corydoras
Corydoras sodalis
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 South America
A spotted corydoras from the Rio Amazonas and Peruvian tributaries, closely resembling Corydoras ambiacus with a cream body and dark spotting, but distinguishable by geographical origin and subtle pattern differences. Peaceful and social, it requires groups of 6+ on fine sand in well-oxygenated, clean water.
Care Guide
Diet
Sodalis corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders that primarily consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts once daily, removing uneaten food after 2-3 hours to maintain water quality.
Behavior
These peaceful, social catfish are most active during dawn and dusk, spending much of their time sifting through substrate in search of food. They are schooling fish that exhibit reduced stress and more natural behavior when kept in groups of 6 or more, often resting together in shaded areas. They produce audible squeaking or squealing sounds, particularly during feeding or when stressed.
Breeding
Breeding Sodalis corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved by hobbyists. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and a well-established group with proper male-to-female ratios. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially, making rearing challenging.
Tank Mates
Similar peaceful temperament and bottom-dwelling habits; compatible water parameters
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmers that don't compete for bottom space or food
Peaceful schooling fish with identical water parameter requirements
Peaceful and occupy different water zones; monitor for any territorial behavior
Peaceful invertebrates that share bottom habitat; ensure adequate hiding spots
Generally peaceful but may occasionally compete for bottom space; provide ample substrate
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against substrate
Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily 25% water changes, use ich-specific medication; maintain excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin loss
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, remove decaying food, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure fine sand substrate to prevent injury
Barbel Erosion
Shortened or missing barbels, difficulty feeding, behavioral changes
Maintain pristine water conditions with frequent water changes, use fine sand substrate (avoid coarse gravel), ensure adequate nutrition with quality foods
Bacterial Infection
Ulcers, open sores, cloudy eyes, loss of appetite, lethargy
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibacterial medication, isolate if possible, maintain optimal water parameters
