South American Bumblebee Catfish
Pseudopimelodus bufonius
📍 South America
The South American Bumblebee Catfish (Pseudopimelodus bufonius) is a nocturnal, bottom-dwelling catfish native to South American river systems, recognized by its striking yellow and black banded pattern. It is a hardy and moderately sized catfish that makes an interesting addition to larger community aquariums with appropriately sized tankmates. This species is secretive by nature, spending most of the day hidden among caves, driftwood, and rocky crevices.

Care Guide
Diet
The South American Bumblebee Catfish is a carnivore that thrives on meaty foods such as bloodworms, earthworms, brine shrimp, and high-quality sinking carnivore pellets. Feed once daily in the evening or after lights out, as this species is most active at night. Avoid overfeeding, as uneaten food can quickly degrade water quality in the lower tank zones.
Behavior
This catfish is primarily nocturnal and will spend most of the daylight hours hiding in caves, under driftwood, or among rocky structures. It is generally peaceful toward larger tankmates but may prey upon small fish or invertebrates that fit in its mouth. It is typically solitary and does not require the company of its own kind, though it can be kept with other similarly sized, robust fish.
Breeding
Breeding Pseudopimelodus bufonius in captivity is rarely achieved and considered difficult. Little is documented about their specific breeding triggers, but conditioning with live foods and simulating seasonal water changes with slightly cooler, softer water may encourage spawning behavior. They are believed to be cave spawners, so providing suitable hiding spots is essential if breeding is attempted.
Tank Mates
Similar size and water requirements; robust enough not to be bullied or eaten
Peaceful cichlid of appropriate size that shares similar South American water parameters
Armored catfish that occupies the same zone but is too large to be eaten and holds its own
Hardy bottom dweller of similar size; compatible water parameters
Armored and too large to be eaten; occupies similar zones without direct competition
May be predated upon if small; best kept with larger individuals and monitored closely
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
Small white spots resembling grains of salt on the body and fins, flashing or rubbing against surfaces, lethargy
Raise water temperature gradually to 28-29 C (82-84 F) and treat with an ich-specific medication; use half doses as catfish can be sensitive to medications
Bacterial Infection (Columnaris / Fin Rot)
Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or grayish patches on the body, ulcers, lethargy
Improve water quality immediately; treat with broad-spectrum antibacterial medication such as kanamycin or nitrofurazone at reduced doses appropriate for scaleless/sensitive fish
Internal Parasites
Hollow belly despite eating, white stringy feces, weight loss, lethargy
Treat with antiparasitic medication containing metronidazole or praziquantel added to food or water column
Fungal Infection
Cotton-like white or gray tufts on the body or fins, often secondary to wounds or poor water quality
Improve water conditions, remove affected fish to a quarantine tank, and treat with antifungal medication such as methylene blue or aquarium-safe antifungal treatments
