Taitibee Shrimp
Caridina sp. (Taitibee)
📍 Taiwan selective breeding
Taitibee Shrimp are a selectively bred Caridina variety prized for their striking red and white (or black and white) banded coloration, featuring bold stripes across the body and legs. These compact shrimp display excellent color intensity when kept in optimal soft, acidic water conditions. They are moderately challenging to keep but rewarding for dedicated aquarists seeking a visually stunning nano shrimp.
Care Guide
Diet
Taitibee Shrimp are primarily detritivores that graze on biofilm, algae, and decaying plant matter throughout the day. Supplement with high-quality shrimp-specific foods such as Shirakura or Mosura pellets 2-3 times weekly, and occasionally offer blanched vegetables like spinach or zucchini. Avoid overfeeding, as uneaten food degrades water quality in small tanks.
Behavior
Taitibee Shrimp are active grazers that spend most of their time foraging on substrate and hardscape surfaces. They are generally social within their colony and exhibit natural molting cycles every 4-6 weeks; provide plenty of plants and moss for security during vulnerable post-molt periods. Males may display mild competition for females but rarely cause serious injury.
Breeding
Taitibee Shrimp require stable soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5, GH 4-6) to breed successfully; females produce small batches of 20-30 shrimplets that develop fully in the mother's saddle before release. Breeding is moderately difficult compared to hardy Neocaridina and demands consistent water parameters and excellent nutrition. Newborns are tiny and require abundant biofilm and fine foods to survive.
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful algae eater that shares bottom zone without competing for food or harassing shrimp
Tiny, non-aggressive fish that occupy mid-water column and do not prey on adult shrimp
Nano fish with gentle temperament; minimal interaction with shrimp in planted tanks
Larger shrimp may outcompete or occasionally harass Taitibee; only combine if tank is well-planted and spacious
Essential plant providing biofilm, grazing surface, and molting security for the colony
Hardy plant offering shelter and additional foraging surface without being consumed by shrimp
Common Diseases
Molting Failure / Incomplete Molt
Shrimp unable to fully exit exoskeleton; lethargy; death within 24-48 hours if stuck
Ensure adequate mineral content via GH boosters (Salty Shrimp GH+); maintain stable pH and temperature; provide rough surfaces (moss, wood) for leverage; increase biofilm availability
Muscular Necrosis (MSN)
White opaque patches on body and legs; loss of color; paralysis; rapid decline
Perform 30% water change immediately; check for copper contamination (use copper-free medications only); increase aeration; ensure stable parameters; no proven cure—isolate affected individuals to prevent spread
Vorticella / Fungal Infection
White fuzzy coating on body; lethargy; difficulty molting; visible parasites under magnification
Increase water changes (25% every 2-3 days); add Indian almond leaves or alder cones for tannins; maintain pristine water quality; avoid antibiotics (copper-sensitive); quarantine severely affected shrimp
Copper Toxicity
Sudden death; erratic swimming; color loss; gill damage; affects entire colony rapidly
Perform immediate 50% water change with copper-free water; check all medications, fertilizers, and tap water for copper; use only shrimp-safe products; activated carbon may help remove residual copper
