Cup Coral
Turbinaria reniformis
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Dendrophylliidae
📍 Indo-Pacific turbid reefs
Unique scrolling, cup-shaped SPS that grows in convoluted plates rather than branches. More tolerant of lower light and flow than most SPS — a good entry point into stony corals. Yellow-green to brown.
Tank Mates
Reef-safe, peaceful, and won't damage coral tissue
Small, non-aggressive, and beneficial as a cleaner fish
Reef-safe and helps maintain coral health without predating polyps
Peaceful and reef-safe; pairs well with gobies in established tanks
Algae grazer that won't harm coral or disturb the substrate
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of coloration, polyps appear white or pale, reduced feeding response
Improve water quality, reduce light intensity temporarily, maintain stable temperature (75-78°F), ensure adequate flow and nutrition
Tissue Necrosis
Brown or black patches on coral surface, progressive tissue loss, polyp recession
Increase water changes, improve flow around affected area, remove any competing corals, consider antibiotic dips if severe
Parasitic Infection
Visible spots or lesions on polyps, excessive mucus production, reduced polyp extension
Quarantine affected coral if possible, maintain excellent water quality, perform dips in freshwater or medicated solutions, monitor tank inhabitants for signs
Bacterial Infection
Slime coating, foul odor, polyp deterioration, tissue breakdown
Increase water flow and aeration, perform large water changes, maintain pristine water parameters, consider antibiotic treatment in severe cases
