Duncan Coral
Duncanopsammia axifuga
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Dendrophylliidae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reef Systems
Duncan corals are LPS corals with large, fleshy polyps that extend dramatically during the day and retract at night. They are peaceful, fast-growing, and feed readily on meaty foods. Colonies branch and multiply quickly under good conditions.
Tank Mates
Hardy, reef-safe, and thrive in similar water parameters; may host among Duncan polyps
Beneficial for tank health; generally ignore corals and help maintain water quality
Algae grazers that do not harm corals; help maintain clean surfaces
Peaceful, reef-safe, and occupy different tank zones; minimal interaction with corals
Peaceful nocturnal fish that avoid corals; thrive in low-light conditions
Common Diseases
Brown Jelly Disease
Rapid tissue recession, brown slime covering polyps, visible skeleton exposure, polyp retraction
Isolate affected coral, perform 25–50% water change, improve water flow and quality, remove dead tissue with pipette, consider antibiotic dips if severe
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, pale or white appearance, reduced polyp extension, weakened feeding response
Reduce light intensity temporarily, lower water temperature slightly, improve water flow, ensure stable parameters, reduce feeding stress
Polyp Necrosis
Polyps fail to extend, tissue darkening or whitening, localized death of polyp tissue
Check water parameters (calcium, alkalinity, pH), improve water circulation, perform partial water change, ensure adequate nutrition
Parasitic Infection
Visible spots or lesions on polyps, excessive mucus production, reduced feeding, tissue damage
Quarantine if possible, perform freshwater dip (brief, 5–10 minutes), improve water quality, monitor closely for spread
