Vallisneria Nana
Vallisneria nana
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Hydrocharitaceae
📍 Australia
Vallisneria nana is a dwarf vallisneria with narrow, grass-like leaves that stay much shorter than spiral vallisneria. It spreads prolifically via runners and creates natural-looking meadow backgrounds. Excellent for tanks with moderate lighting and no CO2.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eaters that won't uproot or damage delicate vallisneria leaves
Small, gentle fish that appreciate dense plant cover for security and breeding
Beneficial invertebrates that clean algae without harming plants; thrive in planted tanks
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light requirements and different growth pattern
Creates layered foreground carpet effect; similar care requirements and growth speed
Colorful, peaceful fish that produce nutrient-rich waste; won't damage plant structure
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, leaf holes or transparent patches
Increase fertilizer dosing (macronutrients and micronutrients), ensure adequate lighting, and check water parameters for nitrogen and iron levels
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating plant leaves, reduced photosynthesis, plant decline
Reduce light duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, and manually remove affected leaves
Root Rot
Mushy, blackened roots; plant detachment from substrate; foul odor from substrate
Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste buildup, perform larger water changes, and replant healthy portions in fresh substrate
Melting
Rapid leaf dissolution and transparency, plant collapse within days
Ensure stable water parameters (pH 6.0-8.5, temperature 20-28°C), increase water change frequency, and trim affected leaves to encourage new growth
