Care Guide
Diet
Variatus Platies are omnivorous and should be fed a varied diet including high-quality flake food, small pellets, and occasional live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small amounts 1-2 times daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement with vegetable matter like blanched spinach or algae wafers to support their overall health.
Behavior
Variatus Platies are active, social fish that spend most of their time in the middle water column, though they will explore all levels of the tank. They are peaceful community fish that interact well with other non-aggressive species and display interesting social hierarchies within groups. Males may chase females frequently, particularly during breeding season.
Breeding
Variatus Platies are prolific livebearers that breed readily in community tanks without special conditioning. Females produce live fry every 4-6 weeks when males are present, with 20-40 fry per brood. To protect fry, provide dense vegetation or a separate breeding tank, as adults will readily consume their own young.
Tank Mates
Same species group, compatible water parameters and peaceful temperament
Closely related platy species with identical care requirements
Small, peaceful community fish with similar water parameter needs
Bottom-dwelling catfish that won't compete for space or food
Small algae-eating fish that occupy different tank zones
Peaceful, similarly-sized fish with compatible water requirements
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, fish rubbing against objects, lethargy
Raise water temperature gradually to 28-30°C (82-86°F), use ich medication containing malachite green or formalin, perform daily 25% water changes, ensure good filtration and aeration
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin tissue loss, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove any sharp decorations, use antibiotic medication or salt baths (1 teaspoon per gallon), treat underlying bacterial infection
Dropsy
Swollen belly, scales standing out like a pinecone, loss of appetite, lethargy, pale coloration
Isolate affected fish in a hospital tank, perform frequent water changes, use antibiotic medications, improve water quality and reduce stress, prognosis is often poor
Velvet Disease (Oodinium)
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, clamped fins, scratching behavior, lethargy
Darken the tank and raise temperature to 28-30°C (82-86°F), use copper-based medication or formalin, perform daily water changes, ensure excellent aeration as the disease reduces oxygen absorption
