Sunburst Platy
Xiphophorus maculatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Platy · sunburst
📍 Mexico
A platy variety with a warm gradient coloration transitioning from deep orange or red at the posterior to yellow-gold at the anterior, evoking a sunrise or sunburst effect. Hardy and peaceful like all platies, it is a beginner-friendly livebearer that thrives in community tanks with hard, neutral to alkaline water.
Care Guide
Diet
Sunburst Platies are omnivorous and thrive on high-quality flake foods supplemented with small pellets as their staple diet. Offer frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms 2-3 times weekly to enhance coloration and promote breeding condition. Include blanched vegetables like spinach and zucchini occasionally, and algae-based foods to support their natural grazing behavior.
Behavior
Sunburst Platies are peaceful, active swimmers that spend most of their time in the mid-water column, occasionally visiting the substrate and surface. They are highly social and should be kept in groups of at least 3, preferring a ratio of 2-3 females per male to reduce aggression and harassment. They are curious and interactive, often approaching the glass during feeding times and displaying vibrant colors when in good health.
Breeding
Sunburst Platies are prolific livebearers that breed readily in captivity without special conditions, making them excellent for beginners interested in breeding. Females produce 20-40 fry every 4-6 weeks once mature; provide dense plants like Java Moss or Water Sprite for fry to hide and increase survival rates. Separate fry into a nursery tank or heavily planted main tank to prevent predation by adults.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and identical water parameter requirements make them ideal companions
Small, peaceful schooling fish that occupy different water zones and thrive in comparable water conditions
Algae-eating snails that coexist peacefully and help control algae without competing for food
Peaceful mid-water dweller with compatible temperature and pH requirements, though monitor for aggression
Nocturnal algae-eater that occupies different ecological niche and maintains water quality
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, remove sharp decorations, treat with antibacterial medication if severe, ensure adequate filtration
Dropsy
Swollen abdomen, scales standing out like pinecone, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, perform frequent water changes, treat with antibiotics if bacterial, improve water quality; prognosis is often poor
Velvet Disease (Oodinium)
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, clamped fins, scratching behavior
Raise temperature to 28-29°C, reduce lighting, perform daily water changes, use copper-based treatment or formalin as directed; treat for 7-10 days
