Zygatus Corydoras
Corydoras zygatus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 South America
A corydoras from the Huallaga and Ucayali rivers in Peru featuring a pale body with a distinctive dark lateral stripe and subtle secondary spotting. Peaceful and social, it thrives in groups of 6 or more on fine sandy substrate with soft, slightly acidic to neutral, well-oxygenated water.
Care Guide
Diet
Zygatus Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders that primarily consume sinking pellets, algae wafers, and high-quality corydoras-specific foods. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or daphnia to ensure balanced nutrition. Feed small amounts daily, removing uneaten food after 2-3 hours to maintain water quality.
Behavior
These peaceful catfish are highly social and must be kept in groups of 6 or more to exhibit natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. They spend most of their time on the substrate sifting through sand for food, occasionally darting upward for floating particles. They are nocturnal to crepuscular, showing peak activity during dawn and dusk hours.
Breeding
Breeding Zygatus Corydoras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved by hobbyists. Successful breeding requires pristine water conditions, cooler temperatures (around 72°F), and specific conditioning with live foods. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or specialized fry foods; most captive breeding attempts fail due to egg fungus or parental stress.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and bottom-dwelling habits make them ideal companions with identical water parameter needs
Small, peaceful mid-water swimmers that won't compete for bottom space and thrive in the same soft, acidic water conditions
Peaceful schooling fish that occupy mid-water zones and prefer slightly acidic water similar to Zygatus requirements
Peaceful invertebrates that occupy similar bottom zones; ensure adequate hiding spaces to prevent predation of shrimplets
Peaceful dwarf cichlid with compatible water parameters; may occasionally chase corydoras but generally coexist peacefully
Common Diseases
Barbel Erosion (Whisker Disease)
Deterioration or complete loss of barbels; reduced feeding behavior; increased stress and hiding
Perform 25-30% water changes weekly, improve substrate quality to fine sand only, enhance water quality with frequent testing, and provide high-quality varied diet to boost immunity
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, rubbing against substrate, lethargy
Raise temperature gradually to 79°F, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt at half-dose (corydoras are salt-sensitive), or use ich-specific medication following label instructions carefully
Fin Rot
Frayed or disintegrating fins, white or cloudy fin edges, reduced activity
Improve water quality through frequent partial water changes, maintain optimal temperature and pH, remove sharp decorations, and treat with antibacterial medication if condition worsens
Dropsy
Bloated abdomen, scales standing on end (pinecone appearance), lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish immediately, perform frequent water changes, maintain pristine conditions, provide high-quality varied diet, and treat with antibiotics if bacterial infection is suspected
