Anubias Lanceolata
Anubias barteri var. lanceolata
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
Variety of Anubias Barteri · lanceolata
📍 West Africa
One of the larger Anubias varieties, featuring long lance-shaped leaves with prominent veining and a rich dark green colour. It grows on a thick rhizome and reaches 20–40 cm (7.9–15.8 in) tall, making it a striking background or tall midground plant in larger tanks. Like all Anubias, it is extremely hardy, grows slowly, and must never be buried — attach it to rock or driftwood with thread or glue.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae eaters that won't damage leaves and benefit from the plant's shade
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae on leaves without harming the plant
Small, peaceful fish that appreciate the shelter and won't uproot or damage the plant
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and growth rate
Peaceful mid-water swimmers that coexist well with slow-growing plants
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green, brown, or black algae coating the leaf surface; reduced light penetration to lower leaves
Reduce light duration to 6–8 hours daily, increase water flow, and manually remove algae with a soft brush. Avoid high-intensity lighting and ensure partial shade. Add algae-eating fish like Otocinclus or shrimp.
Rhizome Rot
Soft, blackened rhizome; foul odor; leaves yellowing and dying despite proper conditions
Remove the plant and trim away rotted portions with a sterile knife. Replant only the healthy section on hardscape. Improve water circulation and reduce organic buildup in the substrate.
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow or stunted growth; pale or yellowing new leaves; overall decline despite adequate light
Add liquid all-in-one fertilizer or macronutrient supplements weekly. Ensure adequate fish waste in the tank or increase feeding. Test water parameters and adjust dosing based on response.
Leaf Melting
New leaves appear translucent, thin, or dissolve shortly after emergence
This is typically a temporary acclimation response. Maintain stable water parameters, ensure consistent temperature (72–82 °F), and avoid sudden changes. The plant will recover within weeks.
