Ask Finn

Extremely rare lily relative with ruffled, dark red-brown leaves. One of the most challenging aquarium plants but stunningly beautiful.

Common Diseases

Leaf Melt

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, or dissolve rapidly; often occurs after transplanting or in poor conditions

Treatment

Ensure stable water parameters, reduce disturbance, improve water circulation, and maintain consistent CO2 and lighting. Remove affected leaves carefully.

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Stunted growth, yellowing or pale leaves, weak leaf development, or failure to produce new growth

Treatment

Dose comprehensive liquid fertilizers weekly, ensure adequate macro and micronutrients, and verify lighting is sufficient. Test water parameters and adjust fertilization accordingly.

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating leaves and reducing light penetration to the plant

Treatment

Reduce light duration to 6-8 hours daily, improve water circulation, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, and perform regular water changes. Manual removal of heavily affected leaves may be necessary.

Root Rot

Symptoms

Blackened or mushy rhizome, foul odor from substrate, leaf yellowing, and plant collapse

Treatment

Improve substrate drainage and water circulation, reduce organic waste accumulation, perform partial water changes, and ensure adequate oxygen. Remove the plant and inspect the rhizome; trim affected portions if possible.
