Blastomussa
Blastomussa wellsi
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Mussidae
📍 Indo-Pacific Reef Systems
Blastomussa are large-polyp stony corals with fleshy, round polyps that inflate dramatically at night. They are tolerant of lower light and moderate nutrients, making them a good LPS choice for mid-level placement. They feed readily on meaty foods at night.
Tank Mates
Reef-safe, peaceful, and thrive in similar low-to-moderate flow conditions
Non-predatory, reef-safe, and beneficial for tank health without harming corals
Small, peaceful, and reef-safe; will not nip or damage coral polyps
Nocturnal, peaceful, and compatible with low-light coral environments
Reef-safe and peaceful; may pair with compatible gobies in established tanks
Common Diseases
Brown Jelly Disease
Rapid tissue recession, brown slime coating polyps, visible skeleton exposure
Isolate affected coral, perform daily water changes, remove dead tissue with pipette, treat with antibiotics if severe, improve water quality and flow
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyps appear white or pale, reduced feeding response
Reduce light intensity temporarily, check water parameters (especially temperature and alkalinity), improve water circulation, ensure stable conditions, avoid sudden environmental changes
Parasitic Infection
Visible spots or lesions on polyps, excessive mucus production, polyp retraction
Quarantine if possible, perform freshwater dips (brief, 5-10 minutes), improve water quality, consider copper-free parasite treatments designed for corals
Nutritional Deficiency
Pale coloration, reduced polyp extension, slow growth, weakened tissue
Increase target feeding frequency with meaty foods, supplement with coral-specific vitamins, ensure adequate lighting for zooxanthellae photosynthesis, maintain stable water parameters
