Scolymia
Scolymia sp.
Animalia›Cnidaria›Anthozoa›Mussidae
📍 Indo-Pacific & Caribbean Reefs
Solitary LPS coral with a single large fleshy polyp in extraordinary colour patterns. Slow-growing but stunning. Target-feed meaty foods for best growth and coloration.
Tank Mates
Hardy reef fish that ignore corals and provide natural tank activity without aggression
Beneficial for tank health; unlikely to damage coral polyps and maintain symbiotic relationships
Small, peaceful fish that won't disturb the coral and help control parasites in the tank
Algae-eating snail that poses no threat to corals and helps maintain water quality
Peaceful bottom-dweller that stays away from corals and adds movement to the aquarium
Common Diseases
Coral Bleaching
Loss of color, polyp retraction, pale or white appearance of tissue
Reduce light intensity, check water parameters (temperature, salinity, nutrients), perform partial water changes, and ensure stable conditions. Avoid sudden environmental changes.
Tissue Necrosis
Darkening or browning of polyp tissue, visible tissue recession, foul odor
Isolate coral if possible, improve water quality through increased water changes, check for aggressive tank mates or allelopathic corals nearby, and ensure adequate feeding.
Parasitic Infection
Visible spots or lesions on polyp, excessive mucus production, reduced feeding response
Maintain excellent water quality, increase feeding frequency with nutritious foods, consider quarantine if severe, and avoid introducing infected corals to the main tank.
Bacterial Infection
Slime coating, polyp swelling, foul odor, tissue degradation
Perform large water changes, improve water circulation, remove any dead tissue carefully, and maintain optimal water parameters. Antibiotics are rarely effective in reef systems.
