Clown Rasbora
Rasbora kalochroma
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cypriniformes›Cyprinidae
📍 Malay Peninsula, Sumatra & Borneo
One of the largest and most striking rasboras — deep pink-red body with two large black blotches. Requires soft, blackwater conditions with dim lighting and tannin-stained water to show its best colours.
Care Guide
Diet
Clown Rasboras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement occasionally with blanched vegetables like spinach to support digestive health.
Behavior
These striking fish are peaceful schooling species that display their best coloration and behavior when kept in groups of at least 6 individuals. They are mid-water swimmers that spend most of their time in the middle column, darting between plants and décor. They are shy and skittish, so they benefit from dim lighting and densely planted tanks that provide security.
Breeding
Breeding Clown Rasboras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require very specific soft, acidic water conditions (pH 5.0-6.0) and dense vegetation or spawning mops to deposit eggs. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week before accepting micro foods.
Tank Mates
Similar size, temperament, and water requirements; compatible schooling companion
Peaceful bottom-dweller that shares soft, acidic water preferences and won't compete for food
Peaceful mid-water swimmer with similar soft water needs and non-aggressive behavior
Small, peaceful invertebrate that thrives in soft, acidic conditions; minimal predation risk
Peaceful but territorial; monitor for aggression and ensure adequate space and hiding spots
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against décor
Raise temperature gradually to 28°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or ich medication; treat for 10-14 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, reduce stocking density, treat with antibacterial medication if severe; ensure excellent filtration
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, sores on body, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, maintain pristine water conditions and reduce stress
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, clamped fins, scratching behavior
Reduce lighting, raise temperature to 28°C, treat with copper-free medication or salt; perform daily water changes and maintain excellent aeration
