Croaking Gourami

Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Anabantiformes›Osphronemidae
📍 Southeast Asia

Care Guide
Diet
Croaking Gouramis are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality flake food, micro pellets, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement occasionally with blanched vegetables like zucchini to support digestive health.
Behavior
These peaceful, labyrinth-breathing fish are most active during dawn and dusk, preferring the mid-water to upper zones of the tank. Males produce distinctive croaking sounds during courtship and territorial displays, which is their namesake trait. They are generally shy and appreciate dense vegetation for security, becoming more confident in well-planted environments.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but requires patience and specific conditions. Males build bubble nests and guard fry aggressively; provide shallow water (6-8 inches), dense plants, and temperatures around 26-28°C to encourage spawning. Remove the female after egg-laying and the male after fry become free-swimming to prevent predation.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful schooling fish with matching water parameter requirements
Compatible gourami species; monitor for territorial disputes during breeding
Peaceful algae eater that occupies different tank zones and won't compete for food
Small shrimp that occupy bottom zones; may be eaten if very small but generally compatible
Small, peaceful community fish with identical water requirements and non-aggressive behavior
Common Diseases
Ich (White Spot Disease)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, treat with antibacterial medication, remove sharp decorations that may cause injury
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change immediately, treat with broad-spectrum antibiotic medication, maintain pristine water conditions and avoid overcrowding
Labyrinth Organ Infection
Difficulty breathing at surface, gasping, swollen gill area, reduced activity
Ensure excellent water quality and oxygenation, maintain stable temperature, use aquarium salt treatment, consider antibiotics if bacterial
