Peaceful Betta
Betta imbellis
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Osphronemidae
📍 Southeast Asia
Betta imbellis is aptly named — unlike the highly aggressive Betta splendens, this species is notably peaceful toward conspecifics and can sometimes be kept in pairs or even small groups in heavily planted, well-structured tanks. Males display subtle but attractive blue-green iridescent scales and red fin edging. It prefers very soft, peat-filtered water replicating its native blackwater rice paddy habitat in Malaysia.
Care Guide
Diet
Betta imbellis are carnivorous and thrive on high-protein foods including quality betta pellets, bloodworms, daphnia, and mosquito larvae. Feed small amounts once daily, offering only what can be consumed in 2-3 minutes to prevent overfeeding and water quality issues. Vary their diet weekly to ensure nutritional balance and maintain vibrant coloration.
Behavior
Unlike their aggressive cousins, Peaceful Bettas are notably docile toward conspecifics and can sometimes coexist in pairs or small groups in heavily planted tanks with adequate space and hiding spots. Males display subtle blue-green iridescence with red fin edging, particularly when establishing territories or during courtship. They are mid-water swimmers with moderate activity levels, preferring densely planted environments that mimic their native blackwater habitat.
Breeding
Breeding Betta imbellis in captivity is possible but requires careful conditioning and ideal water parameters (soft, acidic water at 26-28°C). Pairs should be introduced gradually in a heavily planted breeding tank; males may build bubble nests and females will display vertical stripes when receptive. Fry are small and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially, making breeding moderately challenging for intermediate aquarists.
Tank Mates
Small, peaceful schooling fish with similar water requirements and non-aggressive temperament
Algae-eating bottom dweller that won't compete with bettas and prefers soft, acidic water
Peaceful invertebrates that thrive in soft water; provide dense plants for safety
Similar habitat needs but monitor for territorial disputes; ensure ample space and plants
Gentle bottom feeders that occupy different water zones and prefer soft, slightly acidic conditions
Tiny, peaceful fish ideal for planted tanks with soft water; won't trigger aggression
Common Diseases
Fin Rot
Frayed, discolored, or deteriorating fin edges; lethargy and loss of appetite
Perform 25% water changes every 2-3 days, maintain pristine water quality, and treat with aquarium salt (1 tsp per 5 gallons) or antibacterial medication if severe
Ich (White Spot Disease)
Tiny white spots on body and fins, scratching against objects, rapid breathing
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, increase aeration, and treat with ich medication or salt; perform daily water changes
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, clamped fins, rapid gill movement, lethargy
Dim lighting, raise temperature to 28-30°C, and treat with copper-based medication or salt; isolate if possible
Bacterial Infection
Open sores, cloudy eyes, swollen belly, torn fins, or discoloration
Perform frequent water changes, maintain excellent water quality, and use broad-spectrum antibacterial medication; isolate in a hospital tank if severe
