Galaxy Koi Betta
Betta splendens 'Galaxy Koi'
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Osphronemidae
Variety of Halfmoon Betta · galaxy koi
📍 Southeast Asia (cultivar)
Galaxy Koi Bettas are among the most visually complex cultivars, displaying a mosaic of multi-coloured patches — white, orange, black, and metallic blue or green — resembling the marbled pattern of koi fish. The galaxy pattern refers to an additional iridescent metallic sheen overlaid on the koi marbling. Each fish is unique; no two Galaxy Koi Bettas look exactly the same.
Care Guide
Diet
Galaxy Koi Bettas are strict carnivores and should be fed high-quality betta pellets as their staple diet, supplemented 2-3 times weekly with frozen bloodworms or live brine shrimp. Feed small portions once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes, as overfeeding leads to bloating and poor water quality in small tanks.
Behavior
Galaxy Koi Bettas are semi-aggressive surface dwellers that spend most of their time near the water's surface. Males are highly territorial and will attack other males on sight, but can sometimes tolerate peaceful community fish if the tank is large enough and heavily planted. They are curious and interactive with their owners, often flaring and displaying their unique marbled patterns.
Breeding
Breeding Galaxy Koi Bettas in captivity is moderately difficult and requires careful conditioning of both male and female in separate tanks. Males build bubble nests and will guard fry aggressively; females must be removed after spawning to prevent aggression. Expect 50-300 fry per spawn, though raising them requires significant space and frequent water changes.
Tank Mates
Peaceful bottom-dweller that won't compete for food or space; ignores betta displays
Slow-moving and non-threatening; bettas rarely attack snails; helps with algae control
Small, fast-moving schoolers that may trigger aggression; only in heavily planted 10+ gallon tanks
Similar temperament and labyrinth breathing may cause conflict; requires ample space and hiding spots
Armored and unpalatable; excellent algae eater that coexists peacefully with bettas
Common Diseases
Fin Rot
Fraying, discoloration, or deterioration of fins; often starts at edges and progresses inward
Perform 25-50% water changes every 2-3 days, maintain pristine water quality, and consider antibacterial medication (e.g., Maracyn) if severe; isolate if in community tank
Ich (White Spot Disease)
Small white spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, and rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily water changes, and treat with ich medication; quarantine affected fish to prevent spread
Velvet Disease
Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid gill movement, clamped fins, and loss of appetite
Darken the tank, raise temperature to 28-30°C, and treat with copper-based medication or salt baths; isolate immediately as it spreads rapidly
Dropsy
Swollen abdomen, pinecone-like scales, lethargy, and loss of appetite
Isolate immediately, perform frequent water changes, and treat with antibiotics; prognosis is poor, but improving water quality and reducing stress may help
