Cryptocoryne Balansae
Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Cryptocoryne Balansae is a dramatic, tall-growing crypt producing strap-like leaves with deeply ruffled, crinkled edges that can reach 40–60 cm (15.8–23.6 in) in length. Its striking vertical texture makes it one of the most visually distinctive background plants available without requiring high tech. Once established it is robust and spreads into an impressive stand via runners.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-aggressive schooling fish that thrive in low-light conditions and won't uproot plants
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae without damaging plant tissue; add visual interest
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light requirements and slow growth rate
Complementary foreground/midground moss that creates layered aquascaping with Balansae
Peaceful mid-water dweller that appreciates dense plant cover; avoid aggressive males
Common Diseases
Cryptocoryne Rot (Melting)
Rapid leaf deterioration, mushy stems, foul odor from substrate, leaves turning translucent and dissolving
Remove affected leaves immediately, improve water circulation, perform 30% water change, ensure substrate isn't compacted, reduce lighting temporarily, and verify water parameters (pH 6.0-7.5, temperature 22-28°C)
Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Macronutrient)
Yellowing or pale new growth, stunted leaves, loss of ruffled texture, older leaves remain green
Dose all-in-one fertilizer or specific macronutrient supplements weekly; add root tabs if substrate is depleted; ensure adequate lighting (20-70 PAR) to support nutrient uptake
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, leaf yellowing beneath algae
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes (25% weekly), add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus, Siamese Algae Eater), manually remove algae with soft brush, and ensure nutrient balance
Poor Establishment/Slow Growth
Minimal new leaf production, leaves remaining small, plant appearing stalled for weeks
Verify substrate quality and add root tabs; ensure fertilizer dosing is adequate; check water parameters match species requirements; maintain stable temperature (24-26°C optimal); allow 4-6 weeks for acclimation before expecting vigorous growth
