Cryptocoryne Lutea
Cryptocoryne lutea
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 South Asia
Cryptocoryne lutea is a small to medium-sized crypt producing olive-green to brownish-green leaves with a slightly hammered or textured surface. It is one of the most adaptable and forgiving crypt species, tolerating a wide range of water conditions including moderate hardness and near-neutral pH. Reaching 10–20 cm (3.9–7.9 in) in height, it works well in the foreground or midground of medium to large planted tanks, spreading via runners into tidy clumps.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't uproot or damage delicate crypt leaves
Gentle invertebrates that graze algae without harming plants; enhance planted tank aesthetics
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate
Complementary foreground plant that creates layered aquascaping with contrasting texture
Small, peaceful fish that won't uproot plants or disturb the substrate around crypts
Excellent algae control without damaging plant tissue; compatible with slow-growing crypts
Common Diseases
Crypt Rot (Cryptocoryne Melt)
Rapid leaf deterioration, mushy stems, foul odor from substrate, leaves dissolving within days
Remove affected leaves immediately, improve water circulation, perform 50% water change, ensure substrate is not compacted, maintain stable water parameters (pH 6.0-7.8), and reduce nutrient overload
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, transparent or translucent leaf tissue, weak runners
Add comprehensive liquid fertilizer or root tabs containing macronutrients (N-P-K) and micronutrients (iron, boron, manganese); increase water change frequency to replenish minerals
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water circulation, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove visible algae, and reduce excess nutrients in water column
Bacterial Leaf Spot
Brown or black spots on leaves with yellow halos, spots may spread to healthy tissue
Remove severely affected leaves, improve water quality through frequent partial water changes, ensure adequate water circulation, avoid overcrowding, and maintain stable temperature between 22-28°C
