Cryptocoryne Petchii
Cryptocoryne petchii
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 Sri Lanka
A compact, manageable Cryptocoryne from Sri Lanka with narrow, lance-shaped leaves that can range from olive-green to brownish depending on conditions. Often confused with C. wendtii but distinguished by its shorter stature and slightly narrower leaves. It is very adaptable and tolerates a wide pH and hardness range, making it one of the best Crypts for beginners. Forms attractive rosettes in the foreground or midground of most tanks.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that will not uproot or damage delicate Crypt leaves
Gentle invertebrates that clean algae without harming plants; ideal for planted tanks
Small, peaceful fish that occupy mid-water and won't disturb the plant
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate
Complementary low-light plant that creates a natural, layered aquascape
Common Diseases
Crypt Melt
Rapid leaf yellowing, transparent leaves, and leaf loss within days of introduction or after water parameter changes
Maintain stable water conditions and avoid drastic changes. The plant usually recovers within 2-4 weeks as new leaves emerge from the rhizome. Do not remove the plant unless the rhizome is visibly rotting.
Rhizome Rot
Soft, mushy rhizome; foul odor; failure of new shoots to emerge; leaves detaching easily
Improve water circulation and reduce organic waste buildup. Ensure substrate is not compacted. If rot is severe, carefully extract the plant, trim away affected tissue with a sterile blade, and replant in fresh substrate.
Nutrient Deficiency
Stunted growth, pale or yellowing leaves, smaller leaf size than expected
Dose all-in-one liquid fertilizers (e.g., Thrive, Flourish) weekly or as directed. Consider adding an enriched substrate or root tabs if using sand or gravel. Ensure adequate lighting (low to medium) to support photosynthesis.
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reducing light penetration
Introduce algae-eating fish or shrimp (Otocinclus, Red Cherry Shrimp). Manually wipe leaves with a soft brush or cloth. Reduce lighting duration if excessive. Improve water circulation to prevent stagnant areas.
