Cryptocoryne Spiralis
Cryptocoryne spiralis
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Araceae
📍 South Asia
Cryptocoryne Spiralis produces unusually long, slender leaves with a finely serrated or slightly twisted edge, giving it a distinctive spiral character unlike most other crypts. Leaves can reach 30–50 cm (11.8–19.7 in), placing it firmly in background territory. It prefers softer, slightly acidic water and benefits from CO2 supplementation to sustain its taller, more demanding growth habit.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, non-destructive shrimp that graze algae without harming delicate plant tissue
Peaceful schooling fish that thrive in soft, slightly acidic water matching this plant's preferences
Complementary low-light plant with different growth form; creates layered aquascaping
Hardy companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and water parameter requirements
Peaceful, small fish that prefer soft water and won't uproot or damage established plants
Common Diseases
Cryptocoryne Rot (Melt)
Rapid leaf dissolution, mushy stems, foul odor from substrate; often occurs after tank transfer or poor water conditions
Improve water quality, increase water change frequency, ensure adequate substrate nutrients, maintain stable parameters (pH 6.0–7.2, temp 22–28°C); remove severely affected leaves and allow plant to recover
Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Macronutrient)
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of leaf color intensity despite adequate light
Dose with comprehensive liquid fertilizer containing iron, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; use root tabs for long-term nutrient availability; test water and adjust dosing based on plant response
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced photosynthesis, leaf yellowing
Reduce light duration to 6–8 hours daily, increase water changes, add algae-eating fish (Otocinclus, Siamese Algae Eater), manually remove algae with soft brush; ensure adequate CO2 to boost plant competitiveness
Bacterial Leaf Spot
Small dark spots or lesions on leaves, progressive necrosis, leaf deterioration
Improve water quality and circulation, remove affected leaves promptly, avoid overcrowding, maintain stable temperature; consider brief antibiotic treatment (e.g., Maracyn) if infection spreads
