Cryptocoryne Wendtii Tropica
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Tropica'
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Alismatales›Araceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Dark, hammered-leaf variant of C. wendtii. Very compact growth. Dark olive-bronze leaves with unique puckered texture.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage delicate leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Tiny, gentle fish that navigate around plants without uprooting or damaging them
Beneficial scavengers that won't harm plants and add visual interest to the foreground
Excellent companion plant with similar low-light tolerance and slow growth rate
Complementary low-light plant that creates layered aquascaping with Cryptocoryne
Foreground plant pairing; requires slightly more light but compatible in mixed layouts
Common Diseases
Cryptocoryne Rot
Leaves become translucent, mushy, or develop dark spots; plant deteriorates rapidly from the crown downward
Remove affected leaves immediately, improve water circulation, reduce fertilizer temporarily, and ensure substrate isn't compacted. Perform partial water changes and check for poor water quality or excessive organic buildup
Nutrient Deficiency
Stunted growth, pale or yellowing leaves, loss of the characteristic dark coloration, and leaf holes or necrosis
Dose with comprehensive liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients (N-P-K) and micronutrients (iron, boron, etc.). Ensure adequate substrate nutrients and consider root tabs if growth remains poor
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reducing photosynthesis and plant vigor
Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes, manually remove algae, and introduce algae-eating fish like Otocinclus or shrimp to control populations
Melting
Leaves dissolve or become transparent and mushy, particularly after initial planting or during acclimation
This is often a temporary acclimation response. Maintain stable water parameters, ensure consistent temperature (23-28°C), and avoid major water chemistry changes. New leaves will regrow once the plant acclimates
