Cyperus Helferi
Cyperus helferi
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Cyperaceae
📍 Southeast Asia
Cyperus helferi is the only fully aquatic sedge used in aquascaping. Its long, gracefully arching bright green leaves create a unique grass-like texture that moves beautifully in current. It requires CO2 and fertilisation to grow well submerged.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae grazers that won't damage delicate foliage and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, gentle schooling fish that appreciate planted tanks and won't uproot or consume plant matter
Beneficial invertebrates that graze algae without damaging plants and thrive in planted setups
Complementary foreground plant with contrasting texture that shares similar nutrient and CO2 requirements
Hardy companion plant with different growth pattern and lower nutrient demands, adds structural variety
Peaceful dwarf cichlid that appreciates planted environments but may occasionally uproot plants while foraging
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, leaf holes or transparent patches, reduced vigor
Increase fertilizer dosing frequency, ensure comprehensive all-in-one fertilizer with macronutrients and micronutrients, verify CO2 levels are adequate (30-40 ppm), test water parameters for nitrogen and trace elements
Algae Overgrowth
Green or brown algae coating leaves, reduced light penetration, plant appears smothered
Reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, increase water changes (30-50% weekly), add algae-eating fish or shrimp, improve water circulation, ensure CO2 and nutrient balance to favor plant growth over algae
Leaf Melt
Leaves becoming translucent, mushy texture, rapid leaf deterioration after planting
This is normal emersed-to-submersed transition; trim affected leaves and maintain stable water parameters, ensure adequate CO2 and fertilization, be patient as new submersed leaves develop over 2-4 weeks
Root Rot
Mushy rhizome, foul odor from substrate, plant fails to anchor or grow despite good conditions
Improve substrate drainage and water circulation, reduce organic waste buildup, perform partial water changes, consider replanting in fresh substrate, ensure adequate oxygen levels in substrate
