Echinodorus Radicans
Echinodorus cordifolius
Plantae›Tracheophyta›Magnoliopsida›Alismatales›Alismataceae
📍 South America
Very large sword plant with broad heart-shaped leaves. Grows emersed readily. Needs large tanks (55+ gallons). Virtually indestructible.
Tank Mates
Peaceful algae-eaters that won't damage plant leaves and help maintain tank cleanliness
Small, peaceful schooling fish that provide movement without uprooting or damaging large sword plants
Excellent algae control and won't damage or uproot established plants
Excellent companion plant; both are hardy and create layered aquascaping with different leaf sizes
Complementary plant species with similar hardiness; creates diverse texture and height variation
Peaceful bottom-dweller that won't disturb the plant; prefers established tanks with stable conditions
Common Diseases
Nutrient Deficiency
Yellowing leaves, stunted growth, pale coloration, holes in older leaves
Add liquid all-in-one fertilizers weekly or use root tabs. Perform 25-30% water changes to replenish macronutrients. Ensure adequate lighting for photosynthesis.
Algae Overgrowth on Leaves
Green, brown, or black algae coating leaf surfaces, reduced light penetration to lower leaves
Increase water circulation, reduce lighting duration to 8-10 hours daily, add algae-eating fish or shrimp, manually remove affected leaves
Root Rot
Mushy, blackened roots, foul odor from substrate, leaf yellowing and wilting despite adequate nutrients
Improve substrate drainage, reduce organic waste buildup, perform partial water changes, remove severely affected roots, consider substrate replacement if widespread
Potassium Deficiency
Yellowing between leaf veins while veins remain green, weak new growth, leaf edges browning
Dose potassium-specific fertilizer or all-in-one fertilizer containing potassium. Increase fertilization frequency in nutrient-poor water conditions.
