Echinodorus Red Rubin

Echinodorus Red Rubin

📍 South America

Ask Finn

Echinodorus Red Rubin is a stunning sword plant prized for its deep red to burgundy leaf coloration, which intensifies under high light and nutrient-rich conditions. This mid-sized stem plant features broad, lance-shaped leaves and moderate growth rate, making it an excellent choice for midground to background placement in planted aquariums.

Common Diseases

Melt on Transition

Symptoms

Leaves become translucent, mushy, and dissolve; occurs when plant is moved from emersed to fully submerged conditions

Treatment

Gradually acclimate plant to aquarium conditions over 2-3 weeks; maintain stable water parameters; remove affected leaves; ensure adequate light and nutrients

Iron Deficiency

Symptoms

Yellowing of new leaves while veins remain green (interveinal chlorosis); reduced red coloration

Treatment

Dose with liquid iron fertilizer (chelated iron) 2-3 times weekly; ensure adequate lighting to support nutrient uptake; check water pH (iron availability decreases at higher pH)

Algae on Leaves

Symptoms

Green or brown algae coating leaf surfaces; reduced photosynthesis and plant vigor

Treatment

Manually remove algae with soft brush; reduce photoperiod to 8-10 hours daily; increase water circulation; add algae-eating fish or shrimp; maintain nutrient balance to prevent algae blooms

Nutrient Deficiency

Symptoms

Stunted growth; pale or yellowing leaves; loss of red coloration; slow development of new leaves

Treatment

Dose with comprehensive liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients (NPK) and micronutrients; use root tabs for substrate fertilization; ensure adequate CO2 supplementation; perform regular water changes
