Waterwort

Elatine triandra

PlantaeTracheophytaMagnoliopsidaElatinaceae

📍 Worldwide temperate regions

Ask Finn

One of the finest-leaved carpet plants in existence — creates an almost moss-like lawn of tiny round leaves. Extremely challenging; requires CO2, very high light, and excellent nutrient control. The pinnacle of carpeting plants.

Common Diseases

Melting/Tissue Necrosis

Symptoms

Leaves turn translucent, mushy, or disintegrate; plant collapses within days to weeks

Treatment

Immediately check and adjust CO2 levels, lighting intensity, and water parameters (pH, GH, KH). Perform 50% water change, increase water circulation, and verify nutrient dosing. Remove dead tissue to prevent decay.

Nutrient Deficiency (Iron/Macronutrient)

Symptoms

Yellowing or pale leaves, stunted growth, loss of vibrant coloration, leaf holes

Treatment

Dose liquid all-in-one fertilizer or separate macro/micronutrient supplements according to tank bioload. Test water parameters and adjust dosing. Increase water change frequency if nutrient buildup is suspected.

Algae Overgrowth (Green/Brown Spot Algae)

Symptoms

Green or brown spots on leaves, reduced photosynthesis, plant covered in algae film

Treatment

Reduce photoperiod to 6-8 hours daily, increase water circulation, add algae-eating shrimp or fish, and perform manual removal. Check CO2 levels—insufficient CO2 favors algae over plants.

Rhizoctonia/Fungal Rot

Symptoms

Black or brown decay at plant base, foul odor, rapid tissue breakdown

Treatment

Remove affected portions immediately, improve water circulation and aeration, reduce organic waste accumulation, and perform frequent water changes. Consider adding beneficial bacteria or reducing tank bioload.
