Exclamation Point Rasbora
Boraras urophthalmoides
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cyprinidae
📍 Southeast Asia
Named for the dot-dash pattern on its flanks, the exclamation point rasbora is a tiny, stunning micro-fish suited to nano planted tanks. It is best kept in large groups with other micro fish or shrimp and requires pristine, soft water.
Care Guide
Diet
Exclamation point rasboras are micro-predators requiring small, frequent meals of live or frozen foods such as infusoria, micro worms, daphnia nauplii, and newly hatched brine shrimp. Supplement with high-quality powdered foods designed for nano fish, fed once daily in small portions. They may struggle with standard flake foods due to their tiny mouth size.
Behavior
These are active, schooling fish that exhibit constant, darting movement throughout the mid-water column. They are peaceful and non-aggressive, thriving in groups of 15 or more where they display natural shoaling behavior and reduced stress. They are best observed in planted tanks where they weave through vegetation.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They require pristine, soft, acidic water (pH 4.0–5.5) with dense vegetation or spawning mops, and fry are extremely small and require infusoria as first food. Success requires dedicated breeding setups and experienced keepers.
Tank Mates
Similar water requirements and peaceful temperament; both thrive in soft, acidic planted tanks
Compatible water parameters and non-aggressive; both benefit from pristine conditions
Similar size, schooling behavior, and soft water preferences make them ideal companions
Small, peaceful bottom-dweller with matching water requirements; helps maintain tank cleanliness
Peaceful mid-water swimmer with compatible temperature and pH needs; similar nano tank suitability
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28–30°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use ich medication (malachite green or formalin) at half-strength for sensitive nano fish
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, lethargy
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, maintain pristine conditions, use antibacterial medication if severe; ensure ammonia and nitrite remain at 0 ppm
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of appetite, color fading
Perform 50% water change immediately, maintain optimal water parameters, use broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment; isolate affected fish if possible
Stress-Related Illness
Faded coloration, hiding, reduced appetite, erratic swimming
Ensure group size of 15+ fish, maintain stable soft water conditions (pH 4.0–7.0), provide dense vegetation for security, minimize tank disturbances
