Fissidens Fontanus
Fissidens fontanus
Plantae›Bryophyta›Bryopsida›Fissidentaceae
📍 North America
A flat, feather-like aquatic moss with a unique branching structure that differentiates it from round-leaved mosses like Java Moss. It attaches readily to rock and wood and grows as a distinctive carpet of interlocking fronds. Slower growing than Java Moss, it produces a tidier, more formal appearance and is popular in Nature Aquarium and Iwagumi layouts.
Tank Mates
Gentle grazers that clean moss without damaging delicate fronds; ideal for planted tanks
Small, peaceful shrimp that forage among moss without uprooting or destroying it
Algae-eating fish that respect moss and help maintain tank cleanliness
Tiny, peaceful schooling fish that navigate moss without disturbing it
Excellent companion plant with similar care requirements and low-light tolerance
Compatible low-light plant that creates layered aquascaping with Phoenix Moss
Common Diseases
Algae Overgrowth
Green, brown, or black algae coating moss fronds; reduced water clarity; moss appears smothered
Reduce light duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water changes (30-50% weekly), manually remove algae with soft brush, introduce algae-eating shrimp or fish like Amano Shrimp
Nutrient Deficiency
Slow or stunted growth; pale or yellowing fronds; loss of vibrant green coloration
Dose liquid fertilizer containing macronutrients and micronutrients 1-2 times weekly; add CO2 supplementation; ensure adequate lighting (low-medium spectrum)
Melting or Decay
Fronds becoming translucent, mushy, or disintegrating; foul odor from substrate
Improve water circulation with gentle aeration; perform 30% water change; remove decaying portions with tweezers; ensure temperature stays within 15-26°C range; check for excess organic waste
Bacterial Infection
Slimy coating on moss; discoloration or blackening of fronds; foul water odor
Increase water changes to 50% every 2-3 days; improve water circulation; reduce tank bioload; consider adding beneficial bacteria; maintain stable water parameters
