Mini Fissidens

Fissidens splachnobryoides

📍 Southeast Asia

Ask Finn

Mini Fissidens is a delicate, slow-growing moss with tiny, feathery fronds that create an intricate, lacy appearance. It features small, finely divided leaves arranged in a distinctive two-ranked pattern, giving it a refined aesthetic ideal for detailed aquascaping. This moss is prized for its ability to attach to hardscape and create natural-looking moss walls or carpets in foreground and midground areas.

Common Diseases

Melt / Tissue Degradation

Symptoms

Fronds become translucent, mushy, or dissolve; browning and loss of structure

Treatment

Ensure stable water parameters (pH 5.5-7.0, soft water), increase CO2 injection, improve water circulation, and perform gradual acclimation if recently introduced

Algae Overgrowth

Symptoms

Green, brown, or black algae coating moss fronds; reduced light penetration and moss visibility

Treatment

Reduce lighting duration to 6-8 hours daily, increase water circulation, add algae-eating shrimp (Amano or Red Cherry), and maintain nutrient balance to prevent excess phosphate

Nutrient Deficiency (Iron / Micronutrients)

Symptoms

Yellowing or pale fronds, stunted growth, loss of vibrant coloration

Treatment

Dose liquid fertilizer containing iron and trace elements 2-3 times weekly; ensure CO2 supplementation and adequate lighting

Rhizoid Rot / Attachment Failure

Symptoms

Moss detaches from hardscape, darkening at attachment points, poor growth despite good conditions

Treatment

Ensure substrate (wood/rock) is clean and free of biofilm; improve water flow around moss; verify CO2 and nutrient levels are adequate; consider re-attaching with fishing line or moss glue
