Ask Finn

GloFish Danios are fluorescent variants of the Zebra Danio, available in colors including Starfire Red, Electric Green, Sunburst Orange, Cosmic Blue, Galactic Purple, and Moonrise Pink. They glow brilliantly under blue or UV lighting. As active schooling fish, they share the same hardy, fast-moving nature as their wild-type counterparts and do best in groups of 6 or more.

Care Guide

Diet

GloFish Danios are omnivorous and thrive on high-quality flake foods and small pellets as their staple diet. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to enhance coloration and nutrition. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes.

Behavior

Extremely active and energetic schooling fish that dart rapidly throughout the tank, particularly in the upper water column. They are peaceful but may harass slower-moving or long-finned fish due to their high energy levels. Best observed in groups of 6 or more, where they display natural schooling behavior and reduced stress.

Breeding

Breeding GloFish Danios in captivity is possible but requires dedicated setup with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops and slightly warmer water (76-78°F). They are egg-scatterers with no parental care; remove adults after spawning to prevent egg predation. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food initially before graduating to micro pellets.

Treatment

Improve water quality with frequent water changes, remove sharp decorations, treat with antibacterial medication if bacterial infection is suspected

Columnaris (Flexibacter columnaris)

Symptoms

Whitish film on body or mouth, loss of appetite, isolation from school, rapid gill movement

Treatment

Increase aeration and perform daily 50% water changes, treat with antibacterial medication, maintain temperature at 24-25°C to slow progression

Velvet Disease (Oodinium pilularis)

Symptoms

Fine golden or rust-colored dust on body, rapid breathing, scratching behavior, clamped fins

Treatment

Dim lighting to reduce parasite reproduction, raise temperature to 28°C, treat with copper-based medication or salt baths following product instructions
