Gold Ring Danio
Danio tinwini
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
📍 Southeast Asia
A miniature danio from Myanmar featuring a distinctive pattern of golden spots or rings arranged along the lateral line on a pale body, making it quite distinct from stripe-patterned danio relatives. It stays under 1.5 inches, is peaceful and active, and is best kept in schools of 8+ in a nano or planted tank.
Care Guide
Diet
Gold Ring Danios are omnivorous and require a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement occasionally with blanched vegetables like spinach to support overall health.
Behavior
These are highly active, social fish that constantly dart and weave through the water column in characteristic danio fashion. They are peaceful schoolers that display vibrant behavior and social hierarchies within their group, becoming stressed or dull if kept in numbers below 6. They thrive in planted tanks where they can explore and exhibit natural schooling patterns.
Breeding
Breeding Gold Ring Danios in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They are egg-scatterers that require very specific conditions including densely planted spawning areas, slightly acidic water, and careful conditioning of breeding pairs. Success requires dedicated breeding setups and experience with small danio species.
Tank Mates
Similar size, peaceful temperament, and identical water parameter requirements make them ideal nano tank companions
Closely related danio species with matching care needs and compatible peaceful behavior
Peaceful invertebrates that occupy different ecological niches; adults are generally safe but fry may be predated upon
Peaceful algae-eaters that share the same water parameters and mid-water zone without competing for food
Hardy plant that provides shelter and structure; danios won't uproot it and it enhances their natural habitat
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, flashing against surfaces, lethargy
Gradually raise water temperature to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use aquarium salt at 1 teaspoon per gallon, and treat with ich medication for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin margins, progressive fin damage
Improve water quality through frequent water changes, reduce stocking density, treat with antibacterial medication, and ensure adequate filtration
Columnaris (Flexibacter columnaris)
Whitish film on body or fins, mouth rot, lethargy, loss of appetite, rapid gill movement
Perform 50% water change immediately, raise temperature to 28°C, treat with antibacterial medication, and improve water quality and aeration
Stress-Related Illness
Faded coloration, hiding, loss of appetite, erratic swimming, susceptibility to other diseases
Maintain stable water parameters, ensure minimum school size of 6+, provide dense vegetation for security, and minimize tank disturbances
