Golden Tiger Barb
Puntigrus tetrazona
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii
Variety of Tiger Barb · golden
📍 Southeast Asia
The Golden Tiger Barb displays a warm golden-yellow body with reduced or absent dark banding. Keep in groups of 6 or more to minimize fin-nipping aggression toward other tankmates.
Care Guide
Diet
Golden Tiger Barbs are omnivorous and should be fed high-quality flake foods, micro pellets, and small granules as their staple diet. Supplement 2-3 times weekly with frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms to promote color vibrancy and health. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes.
Behavior
Golden Tiger Barbs are active, schooling fish that display playful and sometimes aggressive behavior, particularly toward slower-moving or long-finned tankmates. They are best kept in groups of 6 or more to distribute aggression and establish a natural hierarchy. These fish are fast swimmers that prefer tanks with open swimming space and moderate water flow.
Breeding
Breeding Golden Tiger Barbs in captivity is moderately difficult and rarely achieved in home aquariums. They are egg scatterers that require soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5) and dense vegetation or spawning mops to protect eggs from predation. Fry are tiny and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week before accepting micro pellets.
Tank Mates
Similar size and peaceful temperament; schooling behavior complements barbs
Bottom-dweller that avoids competition; helps maintain tank cleanliness
Schooling fish of similar size; active swimmers that match barb energy
Hardy plant that withstands barb activity; provides shelter and cover
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature to 28-30°C, perform 25% water changes daily, use aquarium salt (1 teaspoon per 5 gallons) or commercial ich treatment for 7-10 days
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges, fin loss
Improve water quality with frequent partial water changes, reduce aggression by increasing group size, treat with antibacterial medication if severe
Bacterial Infection
Red streaks on body, swollen abdomen, loss of appetite, cloudy eyes
Perform 30% water change, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment if condition worsens
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, visible parasites, weight loss, clamped fins
Quarantine affected fish, treat with anti-parasitic medication, maintain elevated temperature and perform frequent water changes
