Care Guide
Diet
Melanotaenia goldiei are omnivores that readily accept high-quality flake and pellet foods as a staple diet. Supplement regularly with live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms to enhance coloration and condition. Feed small amounts two to three times daily, ensuring all food is consumed within a few minutes.
Behavior
Goldie River Rainbowfish are active, fast-moving schooling fish that spend most of their time in the middle water column. Males will display vibrant colors and engage in non-harmful sparring to establish dominance, especially when females are present. Keeping them in groups of six or more reduces stress and encourages their most vivid coloration and natural behaviors.
Breeding
Breeding Melanotaenia goldiei is moderately straightforward when fish are well-conditioned with live foods and water quality is pristine. They are egg scatterers, depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants such as java moss, which should be removed to a separate rearing tank to prevent predation. Fry are small and require infusoria or commercial fry foods initially before graduating to baby brine shrimp.
