Gossei Corydoras
Corydoras gossei
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Callichthyidae
📍 Guaporé River, Bolivia and Brazil
Gossei corydoras is a medium-sized species with a golden-tan body adorned with irregular dark markings. It is sometimes called the tail spot cory for the dark blotch at the caudal peduncle. A peaceful schooling species that does well in South American biotope setups with dark substrate and tannin-stained water.
Care Guide
Diet
Gossei corydoras are omnivores that primarily feed on sinking pellets and frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Supplement with algae wafers and vegetable matter occasionally. Feed small amounts once daily, only what they can consume in a few minutes, as they are bottom feeders that scavenge for food.
Behavior
Peaceful, social bottom dwellers that spend most of their time foraging along the substrate using their barbels to search for food. They are most active during dawn and dusk but remain relatively calm throughout the day. They exhibit schooling behavior and become stressed when kept singly, showing increased activity and confidence in groups of 6 or more.
Breeding
Breeding in captivity is possible but moderately difficult and rarely achieved in home aquaria. They require cooler water temperatures (around 20-22°C), frequent water changes, and conditioning with live foods before spawning. Eggs are typically laid on plants or tank glass, and fry are difficult to raise due to their small size and specific food requirements.
Tank Mates
Similar water parameters and peaceful temperament; occupy different water zones
Peaceful schooling fish with matching water chemistry preferences
Peaceful dwarf cichlid from same region; may occasionally compete for bottom space but generally compatible
Peaceful algae eater that shares bottom-dwelling niche without aggression
Peaceful invertebrate that forages similarly; ensure adequate hiding spaces
Hardy plant that provides shelter and won't be uprooted by corydoras foraging
Common Diseases
Barbel Erosion
Shortened or missing barbels, difficulty locating food, behavioral changes
Improve water quality, use fine sand substrate instead of sharp gravel, ensure adequate nutrition with varied diet
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, rubbing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-30°C, perform daily water changes, use ich medication if needed; maintain excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fins, discoloration at fin edges
Perform frequent water changes, improve water quality, remove decaying food, use antibacterial medication if severe
Dropsy
Bloated appearance, scales standing out, lethargy, loss of appetite
Isolate affected fish, improve water quality, feed high-quality foods, use antibacterial treatment; often fatal if advanced
