Green Neon Rasbora
Microdevario nanus
Animalia›Chordata›Actinopterygii›Cypriniformes›Cyprinidae
📍 Myanmar & Thailand
Micro rasbora with a neon green lateral stripe. Even smaller than M. kubotai. Stunning in large groups in nano planted tanks.
Care Guide
Diet
Green Neon Rasboras are omnivores that thrive on a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, finely crushed flakes, and small frozen foods like brine shrimp and daphnia. Feed small portions once daily, offering only what they can consume in 2-3 minutes. Supplement occasionally with live microworms or infusoria to promote natural foraging behavior.
Behavior
These tiny rasboras are active, peaceful schooling fish that display their best coloration and behavior in groups of at least 10 individuals. They occupy the mid-water column and are constantly in motion, darting and weaving through planted areas. They are non-aggressive toward other peaceful species and show minimal territorial behavior even within their own school.
Breeding
Breeding Green Neon Rasboras in captivity is difficult and rarely achieved by hobbyists. They require very soft, acidic water (pH 5.5-6.5), dense vegetation, and pristine conditions to trigger spawning. Fry are extremely small and require infusoria or liquid fry food for the first week before accepting micro foods.
Tank Mates
Similar size and peaceful temperament; excellent algae control for planted nano tanks
Compatible water parameters; will not prey on or harass rasboras
Plant species that provides shelter and natural habitat structure
Similar size and peaceful nature; comparable water requirements
Larger shrimp that won't compete for food; excellent for planted tanks
Hardy plant that provides cover without requiring high light or CO2
Common Diseases
Ich (Ichthyophthirius multifiliis)
White spots on body and fins, rapid breathing, lethargy, flashing against objects
Raise temperature gradually to 28-29°C, perform daily 25% water changes, use ich medication if needed; ensure excellent water quality
Fin Rot
Frayed or deteriorating fin edges, discoloration at fin bases, lethargy
Improve water quality through frequent partial changes, remove any sharp decorations, treat with antibacterial medication if severe
Bacterial Infection
Cloudy eyes, open sores, loss of appetite, color fading, torn fins
Perform 50% water change immediately, maintain pristine water conditions, use broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment if necessary
Parasitic Infection
Excessive scratching, white film on body, rapid gill movement, weight loss
Quarantine affected fish, treat with antiparasitic medication, maintain water quality and temperature stability
